About an hour and half from Calgary, Alberta is the mountain town of Canmore. Many travelers go out west to visit Banff and Yoho, which don't get us wrong- we love, but Canmore has a special place in our hearts and is just as beautiful and has many activities, making it an excellent family vacation spot.
The town of Canmore is tucked below the famous Three Sister Peaks, and beside the glacier Bow River. This year the town closed off Main Street to traffic so pedestrians could walk downtown enjoying the mountain views and check out all the stores and restaurants Canmore has to offer.
If you more of a great outdoors person, Canmore has to covered for that. There are several hiking trails within walking distance, and if you're lucky, you might even spot an elk or two in the evening.
You could spend the entire day simply walking around main street checking out the shops and restaurants. One of our favorite restaurants that we always stop in at is The Wood. I decided to be a bit more adventurous and tried their tuna wonton stack. It was delicious and light, I even had some extra for later. I highly recommend stopping in for lunch- their patio offers some amazing mountain views.
There are several local shops that are a must when visiting Canmore including Stonewaters home decor; Hijynx Toy Store and the head office of the Rocky Mountain Soap Company. We actually toured their head office, which I highly recommend for any handmade soap lover. Once I was done shopping, I made sure to grab an iced coffee from Goodearth Coffee Shop.
If your looking for a vacation spot that offers hiking trail and outdoor spaces to explore, Canmore is a excellent choice. Walk the Canmore engine bridge that takes you around the Bow River and offers some scenic views of the Three Sister Peaks.
For the more experienced hiker, take a short drive up to the start of the Grassi Lakes trail which takes you up the mountain side. This 2km trail (4 km round trip) is a bit challenging at times, however there is a paved trail for more novice hikers. At the top you will find the Grassi Lakes, and a scenic lookout point where you can see the entire town of Canmore below. Find the hiking trail map here.
There is still wildlife to be found in and around Canmore, you just need to know where to look.
After driving back to our hotel after hiking Grassi Lakes, we spotted a bull elk and a group of cow elk. Of course, we were safe in our SUV, however another fellow traveler decided to venture out of his vehicle and approach the elk. We advised him that it wasn't a good idea- especially in fall during the rut. Bull elk are known for aggression at these times, and with the cow elk close by, approaching wildlife is a no-no.
The od bear will venture into town as well, however conservation will attempt to move them away into more secluded areas to ensure the locals and the bear safety.
